BIOGRAPHY
British baritone Benjamin Hewat-Craw is a four-time OPUS Klassik nominee celebrated for his richly coloured voice and exemplary diction. His two recordings on ARS Produktion — Schubert's Winterreise and a programme of English Song — have received widespread critical acclaim.
Equally at home in Lieder, oratorio and opera, Hewat-Craw has performed at the Cologne Philharmonie, Düsseldorf Tonhalle and Beethoven House in Bonn. As an oratorio soloist he has appeared in Cologne and Bamberg Cathedrals in works by Bach, Mendelssohn and Handel. His operatic engagements include productions at Theater Bonn, Aalto Theater Essen, Staatstheater Mainz and the National Opera in Prague.
A finalist in the international song competition Das Lied in 2023, Hewat-Craw studied with Christoph Prégardien and Lioba Braun at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Köln and now works with Emily Hindrichs. He is based in Cologne.
Schubert: Winterreise
Benjamin Hewat-Craw · Yuhao Guo · ARS Produktion · 2020
A direct, unsentimental approach to Schubert's great cycle — recorded after studies with Christoph Prégardien, and building steadily in depth across its arc.

"A flexible, richly coloured baritone voice and exemplary clear diction."
Rheinische Post

"His baritone is very suitable for Schubert's melodies — an altogether highly committed recording."

Never Such Innocence — English Song
Benjamin Hewat-Craw · Yuhao Guo · ARS Produktion · 2022
Three pre-war English song cycles — Vaughan Williams, Butterworth, Gurney — recorded in Germany and bringing this repertoire to audiences for whom it remains largely unfamiliar.
"With an instinctive sureness he captured the different moods of the songs."
Rheinische Post
"A lovely, well-modulated baritone voice... a highly poetic sensibility."

The program Against the War brings CHORWERK RUHR together with the Belgian wind ensemble I SOLISTI, to carry warnings of the 20th century, given voice in sound, into our present. At its center stands Kurt Weill's Berlin Requiem – a work of unvarnished intensity that gives a voice to those forgotten in war, the victims of social and military violence. Hanns Eisler's cantatas, in turn, sharpen the gaze, or rather the ear, toward the ugly face of war as a politically willed catastrophe. The a cappella movements How Doth the City Sit Solitary by Rudolf Mauersberger, Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace by Kurt Hessenberg, and finally Arnold Schoenberg's Peace on Earth bring to sound a kaleidoscope of the greatest suffering, deepest grief, and highest hope – making clear once again how fragile our peace is.
